Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1.臭鼬是the following classifications?

Answer:Crepuscular omnivore

Crepuscular describes animals that are most active during the twilight hours. Within this group are those that are matutinal, active at dawn, and vespertine, active at dusk.

Nocturnal refers to animals that are active at night and diurnal are those that are active in the daytime.

Skunks are omnivorous, eating both plants and animals, and they change their diets with the seasons.

They are all striped and though their most common colour is black and white they can also be found in brown, grey or cream.
2. Which of the following statements about the panda is NOT true?

Answer:Pandas are social animals and generally live in a group of about 5 females

Pandas are solitary animals with each having their own territory and females do not tolerate other females within their range. Meetings with other pandas are rare except for during their mating season.

虽然熊猫是食草,99%的diet being bamboo, it actually has the digestive system of a carnivore. Because of this it doesn't have the ability to digest cellulose efficiently and gets hardly any protein from the bamboo which is why it must eat up to 14kg of it per day.

The panda was once thought to be a member of the procyonidae (raccoon) family but it is now known to be a bear. They are the only bears that don't hibernate although they will often move to lower altitudes during the colder weather.

The female panda only goes into estrous once a year and only for 2 to 3 days so there is only a very small window of opportunity for a pregnancy to occur.
The pregnancy will result in only 1 or 2 panda cubs and the mother is only able to rear one as they require her undivided attention so she will abandon one and leave it to die.
This low birth rate is a contributory factor to their endangered status.
3. What colour is a zebra foal when it is born?

Answer:Brown and white

There are three species of zebra - the plains, Grevy's and mountain.
The plains and mountain zebras resemble horses while the Grevy's is more like an ass.

Zebras are black with white stripes and their stripes are all uniquely different patterns.
4. In what oceans would you find the killer whale?

Answer:All five oceans

Killer whales, or orcas, are found in all the world's oceans and most of its seas but they do prefer the cooler, polar regions.
They also have a preference for coastal areas rather than the deeper water.

The killer whale has a black back with a white chest, white sides and a white patch behind and above both eyes.
5. A common problem with the Australian magpie during breeding season is swooping at and attacking people. Three of these things are successful preventative measures. Which one is NOT?

Answer:Wearing a bicycle helmet

Magpies (or maggies as they are known) are prevalent throughout all Australian urban areas and usually coexist with humans quite harmoniously.
They can become quite aggressive from late August to early October, their breeding season, and they will swoop and often attack people within range of their nests. This is generally about 50m for pedestrians and 100m for cyclists.

They attack the side of the head, the neck and face so a bicycle helmet, which leaves these areas open and does not flap, is of little use.
They prefer to swoop at the back of the head so keeping them within sight will also discourage them. This is why painting eyes on the back of a hat or wearing sunglasses on the back of the head is also a successful deterrent.

Maggies are a protected native bird so it is illegal to harm or kill them.
6. Which of the following areas do NOT have penguins?

Answer:Greenland

All species of penguin are only found in the southern hemisphere.

The Galpagos penguins are the most northerly, they live on the Galpagos Islands which lie near the equator.

Antarctica, Australia and New Zealand are all known to have major penguin populations.

In general the larger penguins inhabit the colder climates while the smaller ones live in the warmer and tropical areas.
7. The colobus monkey is so named because of its:

Answer:Stump for a thumb

'Colobus' is from the Greek word that means 'docked' or 'mutilated.' The monkeys have only a small stump where the thumb would usually be which enables them to move easily along the tops of tree branches.

The proboscis monkey has the long nose, the snub-nosed monkeys have hardly any and the red faces belong to the uakaris.

There are three types of colubus monkeys - the black and white, the red and the olive. They are all long tailed, tree living monkeys found only in Africa.
8. The polar bear is now classified as a 'vulnerable species'. What is widely considered to be the greatest threat to their survival?

Answer:Global warming

The major danger of global warming is starvation and malnutrition secondary to their habitat loss.

Polar bears hunt seals on a platform of sea ice, the rising temperatures are causing thinner ice which makes it much harder for the bears to get to the seals. The ice is also melting much earlier in the year which means they have to go back to shore before they have enough fat reserves to survive the summer, they also have to swim longer distances to get there which uses up even more of their energy reserves.

All of this malnourishment also leads to lower reproduction rates and lower survival rates for those cubs that are born.

Polar bears have black skin and white fur, although the outer layer of guard hairs are actually transparent.
9. Besides being black and white, dalmatians can have any of the following colour spots. Which is the only other colour which is accepted in a purebred dog?

Answer:Liver

The dalmatian has a short, dense, white coat with black or liver spots. The more defined and evenly distributed the spots are makes the dog more valuable.
Puppies are born completely white with spots developing at a later time.

The breed is best known for its work as a carriage dog in the 19th century where they ran beside the horses and then guarded the carriages while their master was busy.

They have had many other uses including war dog, vermin hunter, shepherd dog, circus performer, fireman's mascot, guard dog and as a hound (bird dog, trail hound, retrieving and hunting.)
Today it is primarily a companion dog but remains a very energetic breed with a great deal of stamina.
10. In modern times the black and white Holstein refers to North American cattle. What are those of traditional European ancestry called?

Answer:Friesian

The Holstein, or Friesan, dairy cow is the worlds highest milk producer.
They were originally developed in North Holland and Friesland in the Netherlands.

The USA began importing the dairy cows in the 19th century but a cattle disease outbreak in the late 1800's in Europe caused importation to cease.
US breeders then began maintaining herd records and breeding their own holsteins.

By the 20th century the American Holsteins had become very different animals than the original European cattle so it was decided to differentiate between the two bloodlines.
The two have been crossbred and are referred to as Holstein-Friesan.

Their black and white colouring is due to artificial selection by the original breeders. They usually have black ears, white feet and white at the end of the tail.
